At Habitat Apartments, we have an appreciation for the arts. Our apartments’ location has cultivated a respect for local artists and what they can bring to our community. Over the years, that thriving art scene has also extended beyond Boulder’s city limits and is now flourishing in surrounding areas, as well. Longmont is an excellent example of this. On the second Friday of every month, Downtown Longmont turns into a walking art tour that can’t be missed. Galleries in the area put on their best display, and other exciting events are often scheduled to run at the same time. If you live in Boulder County, it’s definitely worth a trip.
What to Expect
Second Friday starts at 6pm and runs until 9pm in the creative district of Longmont. In addition to open galleries, local businesses and organizations schedule other events on the same night to bring the community a one-stop-shop for art culture. In the past, events have included everything from studio tours to marriage improvement classes, so what will be featured in October is anyone’s guess.
Another fun element of Second Friday is that each month takes on a unique theme. For example, in October 2016, the theme will be Day of the Dead.
What We Know So Far about Second Friday in October 2016
The Day of the Dead theme is likely to feature a heavy emphasis on Mexican culture. We recommend heading over to Barrio E’ Centro, Longmont’s multicultural and community center, before the event to learn more about this exciting holiday in Latin tradition. Each Second Friday, the center holds a Cultural Night, where visitors can experience and learn more about the people and customs that make Latin America so special. Food, music, and dancing will all be on display. We’re expecting an extra special celebration in honor of El Dio de Los Muertos.
For parents, Family Garden will offer a class on how to “babyproof” your marriage. The workshop details how to work together and how to give your child the best possible environment to grow up in, starting with your own relationship. This is a thoughtful addition to the lineup of events on Second Friday.
The last event that has been advertised for Longmont’s Second Friday in October 2016 is another Day of the Dead celebration. Longmont’s BrewHop trolley will be offering rides to the Longmont Museum to view their Dia de los Muertos exhibit, and then back to downtown for the grand opening of the altar displays. The altars are a traditional part of Dia de Los Muertos, which are built to celebrate and honor those who came before us.
Why We Love It
In addition to being a celebration of art, it’s an opportunity for the community to come together. Second Friday gives the people of Boulder County a chance to support hometown artists and the local economy, but most importantly, to enjoy each other’s company. We’re happy to support another township in making their art scene, and entire town, stronger. What’s good for Longmont is good for all of Boulder County.
We encourage you to get to Longmont for Second Friday in October 2016 and see why we love this monthly event so much. If you are a resident of Habitat Apartments, in particular, the event is also conveniently located.
