New Year’s Eve is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the country. Many of the New Year’s traditions are centuries old, but most of us aren’t aware of their origins. If you’ve ever wondered why we pop champagne and steal a kiss at midnight, we share the details on several classic traditions below.

Drinking Bubbly

It’s customary to enjoy a bubbly beverage on New Year’s Eve, from champagne to sparkling juice. This holiday tradition traces back to A.D. 496, when the French began to drink wine to mark both religious and secular rituals. Champagne didn’t become a mainstay in celebrations until the late 18th century, and came about as a result of champagne producers advertising to link champagne with special occasions. Nearly 300 years later, champagne and other types of bubbly are present at many celebrations, including New Year’s Eve parties.

Kissing at Midnight

When the clock strikes midnight, you may indulge in the tradition of kissing your loved one to ring in the New Year. This custom is also hundreds of years old, and dates back to Yuletide in England. During Yuletide, the practice of “saining” (including kissing) was thought to bring protection or blessings. Now, a kiss at midnight signifies a happy year ahead.

Dropping the Ball

The dropping of the ball in Times Square has long been one of the most anticipated New Year’s festivities. This fun tradition originated in Times Square in the year 1907, and the original version was made of wood, iron, and 25-watt light bulbs. The modern version of the ball is approximately 12 feet in diameter, weighs 5.4 metric tons, and is decked out with stunning LED lights.

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions began in ancient Mesopotamia, when citizens made oaths of growth and self-improvement to the gods. This tradition is common in many countries, and each year, approximately 40 percent of Americans make a New Year’s resolution (or several).
