The 15th Annual World Fiesta Party will take place on September 10, 2016 at the Boulder Fairgrounds in Longmont. Located less than 15 minutes from Habitat Apartments in Boulder, this festival is a great opportunity to celebrate the rich and diverse culture of our city.
The event is hosted every year by Intercambio, an organization dedicated to helping immigrants connect with their communities and better assimilate to life in the United States. It evolved as an offshoot of other Intercambio programs, which included teaching English, assisting with cultural assimilation (such as helping individuals find a job or apartment), and even offering courses to help local businesses understand and accommodate foreign customs. The fiesta has since embraced its namesake and become quite the party. Last year, 1,300 people of different cultural backgrounds gathered to celebrate cultural exchange and learn more about their friends and fellow community members.
This year’s gathering is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever, thanks to the Boulder County Fairgrounds providing more space to allow for more guests and more entertainment. There are several local bands in the 2016 lineup, and they are sure to keep things lively and fuel the dance party. The entertainment schedule for The 15th Annual World Fiesta Party is as follows:
7:30 pm: Barrio E’
Barrio E’ hails from the community organization of which it gets its name, and is dedicated to celebrating diversity and respecting individuals through music and traditional dances of the Caribbean and Latin America.
8:00 pm: Grupo Kaoba
Hailing from Denver, Grupo Kaoba plays music in the traditional cumbia style. Expect lots of dancing as this style of music was originally used for courting a mate.
9:30 pm: Logo Ligi
Logo Ligi stems from a cultural community group in Boulder started by brothers Maputo and Mawuenyega in order to celebrate Ghanaian music and dance. The musical style is drum heavy with lots of dancing.
10:00 pm: Basilon Lagunero
This 9-man band plays traditional Mexican music as well as cumbia. Basilon Lagunero is based out of Denver with roots in Longmont, and features brass instrument heavy music with a backing keyboard.
11:00 pm: Bateria Alegria
Bateria Alegria brings the percussion-based styles of Rio de Janeiro to Boulder. Featuring 20-30 percussionists, the band is the primary performing ensemble of the Boulder Samba School.
11:30 pm: Quilombo
Quilombo is a cumbia, reggae, and hip hop fusion band from Boulder. Check out their Facebook page for a great preview video of World Fiesta Party and their music style.
A cash bar and food trucks will also be available. Tickets for the event will cost $30, and all proceeds will go toward funding future Intercambio events. You must be 21 years and older to enter.
The 15th Annual World Fiesta Party is sure to be a hit. Come out, kick back, relax, and have fun with family, friends and neighbors in our community.
