Eating locally sourced foods that are in season provides a host of benefits for your nutrition and the environment. Colorado offers plenty of fresh produce year-round, so you’ll have the ability to choose a variety of healthy foods. Here, we share a selection of crops that are available in the spring and summer as a guide to eating seasonally.
Springtime Produce
During the spring season (March 20 to June 21), local farmers expect to pick an abundance of fruits and veggies that are perfect for incorporating into your meals. For example, in early April, you’ll be able to find flavor-enhancing herbs and vegetables such as chives, horseradish, sprouts, and watercress. As we proceed into late springtime, even more options should become available. In May and June, delicious produce like Arugula, cucumbers, kale, mushrooms, potatoes, spinach, and strawberries are expected to be on the in-season list. Of course, our local farmers’ market may have a different selection to offer, so be sure to browse the Boulder County Farmers Market site before arriving. The markets are re-opening on April 7.
Summertime Produce
While we’re still a few months away from summertime, it’s never too early to begin recipe planning. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll love the selection of locally grown fruits that are in-season during the summer months. Starting in early July, Boulder-area farmers should have an assortment of naturally sweet treats, including apples, apricots, blackberries, blueberries, and boysenberries. Summer is an excellent time of year for stocking up on all sorts of fresh produce, so you’ll find much more than just fruits. During the warmer months of the year, you’ll also benefit from an abundance of vitamin-packed veggies like broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, and onions. There’s no shortage of recipes that you can make with these versatile crops, so feel free to get creative or stick with your go-to favorites.
Colorado is known for its gorgeous scenery, but nature provides more than just a breathtaking view. Our state has excellent farmland that supports a wide variety of produce, so our residents can benefit from shopping locally most of the year. Boulder is home to a wonderful network of farmers’ markets, so it’s possible to enjoy the freshest seasonal foods at a fair price.
