Boulder has its own unique character that can influence the interior design and home décor choices of residents. The city is an environmentally conscious and nature-loving place, which tends to make inhabitants invest in sustainable design. There’s also a great tendency to support local artists and businesses so it’s no surprise to see locally made furniture or artwork in people’s homes.
No matter where you call home, whether you live in a rental community like Habitat or in a freestanding residence, it’s easy to style your place with a little bit of eco-friendly and locally sourced décor. Here are a few easy ways you can add some Boulder inspired design into your home:
Recycled Furniture
A wonderful way to insert sustainable design into your space, while also supporting local businesses, is by investing in recycled furniture. There are many stores all around town where you can buy gently used furniture or newly designed pieces made from recycled materials.
About 5 miles west of our North Boulder apartments, you’ll find an abundance of antique and used furniture at The Amazing Garage Sale. Located south of us is another great home goods and furniture shop called Clutter Consignment. And if you’re looking for new furnishings made from recycled materials, check out the handcrafted goods at Reclaimed Creations.
Local Art
In Downtown Boulder, just a short drive from our rental complex, you can find plenty of independent businesses selling locally crafted furnishings and artwork. Reclaim Style, located on the east end of Pearl Street, actually sells both handmade furniture and art in its expansive shop.
Another great store on Pearl Street, that’s also full of one-of-a-kind goods for your home, is Boulder Arts & Crafts Gallery. It’s a popular destination for locals and visitors interested in unique local artwork. You can visit the gallery or check out its selection of works online, which includes photography, ceramics, and woodcarvings.
Indoor Plants & Balcony Gardens
After you’ve filled your place with beautiful local art and sustainable furniture, you can bring more of Boulder inside via its native plants. Whether you’re interested in potting cacti or planting a small herb garden, consider investing in plants that are indigenous to Colorado so that they can stand the dry climate and high altitude.
Cacti and succulents make for superb indoor plants for Boulder residents. They come in different varietals, most of which are low maintenance and great at withstanding the dry weather here.
If you have a balcony or patio, like many of the renters in our apartment community, you may want to plant a few native herbs and flowers. The popular and pleasant smelling lavender grows well here, as do salvia and agastache plants. All three would add a lot of lovely local color to your home.
With plants, artwork, and furniture, Boulder’s natural and sustainable style can shine bright in your home with just a few simple decorations and additions. Show your love for the city by bringing its local aesthetic into your personal space.
