Colorado is famous for its natural beauty, and local campgrounds are especially gorgeous during the fall and winter months. If you’d like to escape the busy city and enjoy some peace and quiet, explore some of the campgrounds that are convenient to Boulder. Here, we share a few of our favorite options that are just a short distance away from the heart of the city.
St. Vrain State Park
St. Vrain State Park is approximately 30 minutes northeast of Boulder, making it an excellent choice for campers who don’t want to travel far. The extensive grounds of the state park offer ample space for enjoying the outdoors, but you’ll need to book your spot online before arriving. After you set up shop, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking mountain views, hike around the clearly marked trails, and fish in the park’s seven ponds.
Boulder County Fairgrounds Campgrounds
If you’re looking for a laidback winter camping spot that allows RVs, make your reservation at the Boulder County Fairgrounds campgrounds, located in Longmont, just minutes northeast of Boulder. These campgrounds are the perfect opportunity for first-time campers, or those who would prefer to skip the cold weather and bunk in an RV. Restrooms and showers are on site, so bring the pets and enjoy some outdoor time.
Brainard Lake
Looking for more challenging terrain? Make the 50-minute trek to Brainard Lake Recreation area. At Brainard Lake, campers will have the opportunity to participate in snowshoeing and skiing among the beautiful snowy forests. The Waldrop and CMC trails are particularly challenging, but they’re a fun way for experienced snowshoers to reach the iconic Brainard Lake. Many of the trails are dog-friendly, so if your pup loves snow, feel free to bring your furry friends along.
Mammoth Gulch
Many of the camping destinations mentioned here are well-known and busy all year round. If you’d like a more secluded experience, don’t miss out on Mammoth Gulch in the tiny town of Tolland, Colorado. Mammoth Gulch is only an hour drive from Boulder, and it offers prime winter camping spots. Whether you’d like to camp out nestled in the wilderness or you’d prefer an expansive view of James Peak, this campground has you covered. It can be difficult to find directions to this little-known location, so click here to view a map.
